Dynamic CMS Filtering with Page Variables

Dynamic CMS Filtering with Page Variables

Connect page variables to collection list filters so visitors can search, sort, and narrow results without any custom code.

Analytics dashboard — CMS filtering

Building filterable lists without code

Until now, filtering a CMS collection at runtime required either a custom code component or accepting a static, uninteractive list. With this release, any page variable — a text input, a select dropdown, a toggle — can directly control the filter conditions of a collection list. The binding is live: as the visitor types or selects, the list updates immediately, with no page reload and no manual wiring in code.

The filter system supports the full range of transforms: contains, equals, startsWith, greaterThan, isBefore, isIncludedIn, and more. Filters can be combined with AND or OR logic. Optional page variables — those without an initial value — are treated as inactive filters until the visitor provides input, so an empty search box won’t inadvertently hide all results.

Empty states and reset controls

When a filter produces zero results, a dedicated empty state layer becomes visible. You design this layer directly on the canvas: an icon, a message, a suggestion to broaden the search. Pair it with a Reset Variables button — available as a built-in interaction — to let visitors clear all active filters in one tap. The entire experience is designed, published, and maintained without leaving Framer.
